6th graders are currently working on self portraits. They all selected the materials, theme, and feeling for their artwork. They are just starting and I am excited to see their progress with the unique and creative solutions they are coming up with already! Once they are complete we will post them on artsonia.com!

We had a wonderful day exploring several different ArtPrize venues! We started off the morning at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, working to create fashion pieces in groups. After our art making experience we had lunch outside and headed to other galleries. We stopped at KCAD, UICA, Amway Hotel, and the Ford Museum. It was a rainy day, but that did not dampen anyones spirit! We had a ton of fun creating these portraits the first week of school. Each homeroom used a specific color for their portraits. We put it all together to make the exploratory hallway come to life. Can you find your homeroom group?Last year in Brain Quest and Art we did a collaborative project. Students worked on a stop motion animation that was based on a science theme. Ms.Newton (Brain Quest teacher) and I worked together to help the students create their stop motion animations from concept to completion. This included drafting scripts, building sets and models, photographing, and editing their final videos. Here are some photos of production and final products from the project. Last spring 6th graders created self portraits using any materials that they chose. It was exciting to see the results when they were able to have a choice in the medium that they used. Here are some of the results! Every year we put a display of K-8 art at the Administration Building. This year I was able to hang four pieces from Nickels Intermediate School. Here they are! Congratulations to the four students who had work selected to be in the show. What a wonderful day! A group of 30 6th grade students, the PE teacher, a wonderful group of chaperones, and me went down to ArtPrize 7. We started our day off at the GVSU Eberhard Center with a art making activity. Students were given junk and asked to create something that was wearable. They created some very interesting pieces! Next we ate lunch by the river outside and enjoyed some bird watching. After lunch we headed to the UICA and some of the outdoor venues. It was a bright sunny day and we were able to see many wonderful pieces of art!
Five of our student artists will have their watercolor paintings on display at Barnes and Noble Rivertown Crossing Mall October 10th from 10am to 4pm. There is a district wide book fair. Check out the flyer below and stop by! This year for watercolor painting 5th graders explored the artwork of Georgia O'Keeffe and used her work as inspiration for their flower paintings. Students learned how to paint using several different painting techniques such as; wet-on-wet, salt texture, graded wash, and crayon resist. Check out all of their work on our online art gallery.

This is what Clayton had to say about his artwork: The most important thing I have learned while doing this artwork is details really bring the art out. When people look at this piece I hope they will be inspired to make a piece of their own and let your imagination go wild. This work allowed me to explore the grand canyon and have fun doing it! |
