"Scribbling is art, no matter what anybody says." Colorful Persona, is a mural collaboration between artist Jennifer Mercede and the Nickels 6th grade class of 2013-2014. It was installed in the hallway this week. To view the video about the experence created by the artists friend and videographer, Heather Hawkins, click below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpqsLBEVJug This piece brought up some amazing discussions amongst the 6th graders. Here are a few quotes from the 6th graders about the experience: "I learned about just following your dreams, and that you can do what you want to with art. Also to have fun!" "I learned how to paint in an abstract way. I learned that you can use the end of the paintbrush to scrape paint. I liked that she only cared if we had fun. I would like to learn more about abstract art." "One thing that I learned was that sometime art forms make you feel free." About the final piece "It looks epic!" "It was a privilege to have her here." "I like how she let us be ourselves, be creative, and get a little messy. It looks awesome and really cool!" "I want to know where to get those boards? I want to get some and do that at home!" Because of funding from the BCFAB we were able to create this artwork and allow the students to have this memorable experience of a visiting artist! This is the sign that is hanging up next to the mural to tell how the mural came to be and it gives you a few points to think about while viewing the work.

Day two with artist Jennifer Mercede was another amazing day! Jennifer had a really great message for the students about following your passion, in anything that you do. Whether it be art, sports, science, math, she encouraged the kids to stick with the things that they really like and to become passionate about them. Take a look below for more photos from today with artist Jennifer Mercede! Watch for more photos later after it has been installed in the halls.
